Description
Gabun, Punu, black 'Ikwara mask'
The black-painted masks resemble the typically "Asian"-looking carved eyes of the white Punu masks in style.
These Ikwara masks appear at dusk or at night and are danced on short stilts. In times of misfortune and illness, the Ikwara masks are said to offer protection and ward off evil.
This particular Ikwara mask features a beautiful, high combed hairstyle with two braided side pieces.
