The Bongo sculpture was photographed in situ by the missionary
Padre Gino Tosello between 1945 and 1955 and published for the first time in 1962
in the Catholic missionary newspaper Nigrizia, November 1962, p. 30.
In the accompanying text, also written by Gino Tosello, the sculpture was already described as
"old" at that time.
It was published a second time in the volume: mains de maitres 2001, p. 237, No. 38.
On the occasion of the exhibition of the same name from March 22, 2001, to June 24, 2001: Espace Culturel
BBL at Place Royale in Brussels, published with the following information:
Provenance: Ancienne Collection Rappaport; Collection Max Itzikovitz, Paris.
In response to our request for correction
"The Floros and Sigrid Katsouros Collection already owned this figure at that time,
acquired from Mr. Jochen Krüger and Itzikovitz,"
an ERRATUM note was added to the book.
Provenance: Floros and Sigrid Katsouros Collection, Hanover
The description in mains de maitres, 2001: "Statue memoriale ngya par un des fils
de Kwanja Gete" is also incorrect, as it has been proven—as shown below—
that this is undoubtedly a sculpture by Kwanja Gete. For the
natives, it is considered his most important work.
